Facilities Management. What is it?

You may have heard of the term or know someone that works within the industry, but do you know what is involved with Facilities Management?

Facilities Management (FM) can be defined as the means and services that support the functionality, safety, compliance, and sustainability of properties, surrounding grounds and infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to;

  • Lease management
  • Maintenance and operations
  • Energy / Utilities management
  • Occupancy and space management
  • Employee and tenant experience
  • Property management
  • Emergency management
  • Health and safety management

There are also different types of FM more commonly known as Hard Facilities Management and Soft Facilities Management.

Hard Facilities Management is associated with physical assets of building maintenance such as mechanical and electrical services, heating and ventilation systems, fire safety, structural maintenance etc.

Soft Facilities Management focuses on tasks performed by people such as grounds maintenance, security, waste management, catering, pest control, cleaning services, serviced reception services etc.

The demand for FM in Aberdeen has never been greater. More and more companies are looking to out-source the responsibility of maintaining the building in which it frees up their own staff time so that can focus on the demands of their own roles. The functions of having a facilities management team are often favoured by employees, tenants, and landlords as it covers the responsibility for services that enable and support business performance.

Did you know that we have our own Facilities Management team at WQ, based on-site? Our growing team of 9 work hard to meet the demands of our campus and keep our services compliant to allow our clients and tenants to focus on what they need to.
